Abstract

Pembangunan Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) di Kabupaten Kulon Progo merepresentasikan percepatan modernisasi infrastruktur dan mobilitas regional, namun juga memunculkan paradoks baru berupa ketimpangan persebaran pertumbuhan ekonomi. Aktivitas ekonomi dan pembangunan kawasan yang semakin terpusat di sekitar bandara belum mampu menciptakan pemerataan manfaat bagi wilayah Kulon Progo secara menyeluruh, meskipun kabupaten ini memiliki potensi besar di sektor pariwisata, agraris, pesisir, serta budaya lokal. Kondisi ini menunjukkan bahwa ruang tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai wadah ekonomi, tetapi juga arena negosiasi antara kepentingan global dan identitas lokal yang berakar pada sejarah, lanskap, dan praktik sosial masyarakat. Berangkat dari konteks tersebut, tugas akhir ini mengusulkan rancangan Cultural–Economic Hub pada koridor YIA sebagai medium arsitektural yang merepresentasikan keragaman potensi Kulon Progo sekaligus menjembatani relasi antara modernitas dan lokalitas yang kini terfragmentasi. Pendekatan perancangan menggunakan teori Critical Regionalism sebagai kerangka utama untuk membaca, menafsirkan, dan merespons konteks tapak, budaya, dan dinamika sosial-ekonomi secara selektif dan kritis. Dalam kerangka ini, arsitektur dipahami bukan sebagai simbol formal semata, melainkan sebagai strategi mediasi yang mengakomodasi kemajuan teknologi tanpa menghilangkan kontinuitas identitas ruang dan masyarakatnya. Melalui pendekatan tersebut, desain Cultural–Economic Hub diarahkan untuk menghadirkan arsitektur yang kontekstual, representatif, dan bermakna—sebuah katalis yang mengaktifkan kembali potensi ekonomi lokal, memperkuat identitas kawasan, dan membangun kembali hubungan manusia dengan tempatnya melalui ruang yang merefleksikan dialog antara global dan lokal. =====================================================================================================================================
The development of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) in Kulon Progo marks a significant acceleration of regional modernization, infrastructure expansion, and mobility. However, this progress has also generated a paradox in the form of spatial and economic disparities. Economic activities and growth remain concentrated within the airport’s immediate surroundings, while broader areas of Kulon Progo have yet to experience proportional benefits—despite possessing strong potential across tourism, agriculture, coastal ecosystems, and cultural assets. This condition indicates that space functions not merely as an economic platform, but as a field of negotiation between global imperatives and locally rooted identity shaped by history, landscape, and social practices. Responding to this context, this final project introduces the design of a Cultural–Economic Hub along the YIA corridor as an architectural medium to represent the diverse potential of Kulon Progo while mediating the fragmented relationship between modernity and locality. The design approach applies Critical Regionalism as the primary theoretical framework to interpret and respond to site conditions, cultural values, and socio-economic dynamics in a selective and reflective manner. Within this framework, architecture is understood not solely as a representational object, but as a strategic mediator that accommodates technological progress while maintaining continuity of regional identity and community meaning. Through this approach, the Cultural–Economic Hub is envisioned as a contextual, representative, and meaningful architectural intervention—a catalyst that reactivates local economic potential, reinforces territorial identity, and restores the human–place relationship through spatial experiences rooted in the dialogue between the global and the local.
