Abstract

The utilization of marine current energy as a renewable energy source is a promising alternative to support the energy needs of small scale fishing vessels. This study aims to analyze the performance of a nozzle diffuser cross flow marine turbine by investigating the effect of turbine blade number on rotational speed (RPM), torque, and turbine efficiency through laboratory scale experiments. The Di/Do ratios used in this study were 0.5 (14 blade, 16 blade, and 16 blade hollow design turbines) and 0.7 (20 blade and 22 blade turbines), with flow velocities of 5 knots, 7.5 knots, and 10 knots. The performance parameters analyzed included rotational speed (RPM), torque, angular velocity, mechanical power, water power, and turbine efficiency. The experimental results showed that the rotational speed ranged from 79 to 306 RPM, while the generated torque ranged from 0.303 to 0.582 N·m. The turbine efficiency ranged from 4.32% to 8.64% for the 14 blade configuration, 4.51% to 9.46% for the 16 blade configuration, and 1.86% to 3.83% for the 16 blade hollow design configuration. Meanwhile, the 20 blade and 22 blade turbines did not rotate under any of the tested flow velocities; therefore, their performance could not be evaluated. Based on the experimental results, the 16 blade configuration exhibited the best performance, achieving a maximum turbine efficiency of 9.46% at a flow velocity of 10 knots. These findings indicate that both the blade number and turbine configuration significantly influence the conversion of water flow energy into mechanical energy.
