Abstract

Lincak, a vernacular seating facility of Javanese society, currently faces relevance challenges in modern housing due to its massive dimensions, fragile knockdown construction prone to wobbling, and a visual appearance perceived as overly ethnic without philosophical depth. This research aims to revitalize the traditional lincak design through the ATUMICS approach (Artifact, Technique, Utility, Material, Icon, Concept, Shape) combined with the Neo-Vernacular concept, in order to bridge local cultural values with the functional needs of urban society. The study employed a qualitative design research method, involving field observations in Surabaya and Sidoarjo, questionnaires distributed to 43 respondents, and ethnographic interviews with lincak owners in Blitar, Sidoarjo, and Gresik. The preference-mapping results indicate a high level of interest (34.8%) among urban dwellers in furniture with local cultural identity; however, existing lincak products have yet to meet this need due to limited spatial adaptability and structural safety. Based on these findings, a Neo-Vernacular lincak was designed featuring a safe modular system and a more precise knockdown construction, eco-friendly bamboo material, and an adaptive configuration of backrest, armrest, cushion, and nesting system suited to minimalist housing and apartment spaces. The usability test results show that seating comfort falls into the excellent category, a capacity of two to three users functions optimally, and the product structure is rated strong, although the armrest joint and the durability of the knockdown mechanism still require further refinement. This research concludes that the synergy between ATUMICS and Neo-Vernacular principles enables lincak to be revitalized as a "cultural seating facility" that is functional, safe, and ergonomic, while strengthening the collective memory of local cultural identity within the context of modern housing.
