Abstract

The construction of the school complex in Project XYZ, located in Penajam Paser Utara Regency, East Kalimantan, is situated on sloping terrain, requiring extensive cut-and-fill operations. Changes in slope geometry and additional structural loads have caused slope instability in several areas, particularly around the Auditorium Building and Kindergarten Building. Therefore, a comprehensive slope stability evaluation and the design of retaining structures and foundations are required to ensure the safety and stability of the construction. This study utilized secondary data, including Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and Cone Penetration Test (CPT) results, topographic data, and structural loading data. Slope stability analyses were performed using the Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) under existing slope conditions, after cut-and-fill operations, under structural loading, and after implementing various reinforcement alternatives. The retaining structure alternatives evaluated included geotextile combined with a Geoforce Segmental Retaining Wall (GSRW), geotextile combined with a reinforced concrete retaining wall, and geotextile combined with steel sheet piles. In addition, shallow foundations and bored pile foundations were designed based on bearing capacity, settlement, and structural loading requirements. The analysis results indicate that the existing slopes satisfy the required stability criteria; however, cut-and-fill activities and building loads reduce the safety factor of several slope sections below the acceptable limit, necessitating slope reinforcement. Based on the technical evaluation and cost estimation, the recommended reinforcement alternative successfully improves slope stability to meet the design criteria. Furthermore, the foundation design indicates that shallow foundations are suitable for areas with adequate soil bearing capacity, whereas bored pile foundations are recommended for locations subjected to higher structural loads. The proposed design is expected to provide a safe, effective, and economical engineering solution to support the sustainable development of Project XYZ.
