Abstract

This study aims to design and analyze an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system to utilize exhaust gas waste heat from a 300 kW marine diesel engine. Utilizing R1233zd(E) as the working fluid, which is ideal for low-to-medium temperature applications, a thermodynamic analysis was conducted with an exhaust gas inlet temperature of 320°C and an outlet temperature limited to 190°C. The main operating parameters of the system were established at an evaporator temperature of 112°C, a condenser temperature of 45°C, and an expander inlet degree of superheat of 15°C. The calculation results indicate that the designed ORC system is capable of generating a net power output of 4.49 kW, achieving a thermal efficiency of 8.98%, and a cycle pressure ratio of 5.33. Additionally, the preliminary design of the heat exchanger requires a heat transfer area of approximately 5.5 m², with the exhaust gas pressure drop remaining within safe operating limits. Based on these findings, the proposed ORC system demonstrates significant potential to effectively convert waste heat into supplementary electrical power without burdening or disrupting the main performance of the marine engine.
