Abstract

The concept of place attachment explains how emotional and functional bonds between people and their environment form a foundation of identity, memory, and socio-psychological well-being. The loss of a long-inhabited environment is proven to produce significant impacts, as illustrated by Marc Fried’s study on deep grief following community relocation. Yet, many housing transformation projects are still treated merely as technical problems of density, often overlooking the continuity of residents’ attachment to place. This gap becomes the departure point of this research, particularly in the context of Gang Venus, Jakarta, where the shift toward vertical housing risks disrupting the socio-economic networks and collective meaning that have developed over time. This design draws on theories of place attachment and incremental dwelling, contextualized through international precedents. The methodology adopts a Force-Based Framework in which typology functions as an instrument to translate socio-spatial conditions into a design structure. The synthesis process produces design criteria and a prototypical proposal that responds to place-based continuity. The findings highlight a conceptual novelty in defining adaptive principles for vertical housing transformation, resulting in a design hypothesis that supports incremental growth, reinforces social structure through communal spatiality, and accommodates local economies within the new housing system—particularly the garment-based micro-industry that defines identity in the area. Thus, transformation is not only a strategy for increasing spatial intensity, but also to sustain social life, collective memory, and economic opportunity embedded in place.
