Abstract

Interior design projects often face challenges in balancing the need for flexible design exploration with structured project control. This study aims to determine the level of importance of project effectiveness, team coordination and collaboration, and project success, together with their constituent indicators, in supporting the successful integration of Design Thinking and Waterfall in the interior design project of Kafe X. A case study approach with a mixed methods design was employed through observation, document review, and reflective interviews with seven respondents, whose assessments were then analyzed using the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP) with the extent analysis approach. The findings show that the integration is implemented through an iterative zone covering the five Design Thinking stages alongside the initial Waterfall stages, and a linear zone comprising execution, testing and evaluation, and maintenance, connected by Design Freeze as a transition gate at which the design is finalized before implementation. The weighting results place team coordination and collaboration as the highest-weighted variable (0.5668), followed by project effectiveness (0.3563) and project success (0.0769), while at the indicator level the highest weights are obtained by communication quality (0.2525), level of cooperation (0.1734), and workflow continuity (0.1361). A comparison with empirical evidence from previous studies and with a precedent project lacking a design freeze mechanism provides indications supporting the contribution of Design Freeze to project time and cost performance. This study concludes that communication quality and coordination among parties are the most prioritized aspects in supporting the successful integration of both approaches in small-scale café interior design projects.
