Abstract

Oil tankers play an important role in the world economy as the main means of transportation to transport the world's most widely used energy source, oil. Tankers with a size of more than 5,000 DWT are required to be equipped with a double bottom structure based on MARPOL 73/78 and the Common Structural Rules. This structure significantly reduces the volume of cargo oil tank and also increases the weight of the ship's structure. Therefore, research is needed to optimize the design of double bottoms on tankers to maximize the volume of cargo oil tank and minimize the weight of the ship's structure. Various optimization methods can be used to find the most optimal solution, one of which is brute force search method. This research will be carried out in two optimization stages, namely double bottom design optimization and double bottom structure optimization. Optimization process is carried out using Maxsurf design software and Visual Basic for Application programming language. The cargo oil tank volume of a 30,000 DWT tanker was successfully optimized, resulting in an increase of 430.7113 m³, or 0.99% compared to the existing cargo oil tank volume, through the optimization of the double-bottom design. The optimized tanker design achieved a 1.16 m reduction in overall length while maintaining nearly the same payload as the existing vessel. This reduction in length decreases the structural loads acting on the ship, allowing the dimensions of the structural members to be minimized. Consequently, the vessel's lightweight (LWT) was reduced by 192.1684 tonnes, representing a 3.26% decrease.
