Abstract

Architecture is a collective experience involving complex perceptual and cognitive processes. Within the neuroaesthetic framework, architecture is viewed as an interpretive process designed to evoke creative and interactive aesthetic experiences. One way to foster diverse interpretations by incorporating ambiguity is the result of complex visual stimulation and serves to enrich human cognitive capacity. In architecture, ambiguity can serve as an interpretation of architectural expression that not only incorporates elements of familiarity but also embodies novelty and emotional and cognitive reactions to stimulate the dynamics of human perception. This design aims to apply the concept of ambiguity as a form of aesthetic experience in the design of the “Creative Hub” public space, which encourages user participation and exploration of the building.
Through a deductive framework, this thesis develops the concept of “Assemble Uncertainty” by interweaving visual, spatial, and conceptual ambiguities to present interpretive complexities that stimulate users’ creativity and exploration. Research methods were used to explore initial ideas and formulate design criteria, including a literature review, case studies, photo elicitation, interviews, and brainstorming. The design method employed a generative process to explore social aspects of memory and propose a schematic design concept. Based on the results of the literature review, there are three principles of ambiguity in architecture: visual ambiguity, spatial ambiguity, and conceptual ambiguity. Based on the research findings, the dominant design aspects incorporate these three ambiguities into the Creative Hub’s architecture, enabling users to explore the space and strengthen their cognitive capacities through diverse perception are: difference, containment, and identity.
This design translates the overarching idea or concept of ambiguity through, first, the use of an LED mesh façade to create an experience of dual identity on the façade depending on the temporal context. Second, the incorporation of ramps and stairs as dynamic circulation elements encourages exploration and a layered spatial experience. Third, the interpretation of ambiguous spatial boundaries is achieved through the arrangement of architectural elements using solid-void materials. These three design applications for the Creative Hub have the potential to support creative activities and stimulate the concept of ambiguity as an exploratory and interactive aesthetic experience.
