Abstract
Arsitektur tropis dan pendekatan arsitektur bioklimatik memandang bangunan sebagai sistem modifikasi iklim yang berfungsi mengelola hubungan antara kondisi lingkungan dan kebutuhan fisiologis manusia, khususnya dalam iklim tropis panas–lembab. Namun, dalam praktik hunian vertikal di kawasan perkotaan tropis, prinsip-prinsip tersebut sering tereduksi oleh pendekatan desain generik yang kurang responsif terhadap karakter iklim dan pengalaman penghuni. Perancangan ini bertujuan mengkaji relevansi teori arsitektur tropis dan pendekatan bioklimatik sebagai kerangka konseptual untuk memahami kenyamanan termal dan well-being penghuni pada hunian vertikal di kawasan urban tropis. Well-being dipahami sebagai luaran dari kualitas kenyamanan termal, pencahayaan alami, kualitas udara, serta pengalaman ruang yang terbentuk melalui interaksi antara bangunan, iklim, dan penghuni. Metode yang digunakan mengintegrasikan force-based framework dengan pendekatan bioklimatik untuk membaca hubungan sebab–akibat antara kondisi iklim, karakter tapak, pola aktivitas penghuni, serta respons arsitektural yang relevan. Analisis forces melalui identifikasi assets dan constraints menghasilkan strategi desain pasif yang berangkat dari teori, meliputi ventilasi silang, pengendalian radiasi melalui fasad berlapis, pembentukan ruang transisi semi-outdoor, serta integrasi vegetasi vertikal sebagai elemen pengatur mikroklimat, yang kemudian disintesis ke dalam konsep “ekosistem vertikal” sebagai sistem hunian yang adaptif terhadap iklim tropis dan berorientasi pada peningkatan kenyamanan termal, kualitas ruang, dan well-being penghuni.

Tropical architecture and the bioclimatic architectural approach regard buildings as climate-modifying systems that mediate the relationship between environmental conditions and human physiological needs, particularly within hot-humid tropical climates. However, in the practice of vertical housing in tropical urban areas, these principles are often diminished by generic design approaches that are insufficiently responsive to climatic characteristics and occupants' experiences. This design study aims to examine the relevance of tropical architecture theory and the bioclimatic approach as conceptual frameworks for understanding thermal comfort and occupant well-being in vertical housing within tropical urban contexts. Well-being is understood as an outcome of thermal comfort, natural lighting, air quality, and spatial experiences formed through the interaction between buildings, climate, and occupants. The method employed integrates a force-based framework with a bioclimatic approach to identify causal relationships among climatic conditions, site characteristics, occupants' activity patterns, and relevant architectural responses. Force analysis through the identification of assets and constraints generates passive design strategies grounded in theoretical principles, including cross ventilation, solar radiation control through layered façades, the creation of semi-outdoor transitional spaces, and the integration of vertical greenery as a microclimate-regulating element. These strategies are subsequently synthesized into the concept of a “vertical ecosystem,” conceived as a housing system that is adaptive to tropical climates and oriented toward enhancing thermal comfort, spatial quality, and occupant well-being.
