Abstract
Women’s entrepreneurship drives economic growth, yet the distinct journeys of widowed and divorced single mothers remain overlooked. This qualitative study compares the lived experiences of 14 Muslim single-mother micro-entrepreneurs in Jakarta and Surabaya (9 widows and 5 divorcees) using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to examine how they navigate the intersections of financial survival, family responsibilities, and faith. The findings reveal that marital dissolution pathways fundamentally shape small business survival strategies. In finance, widows benefit from initial family support while actively avoiding interest-based loans (riba), whereas divorcees face a complete absence of spousal financial support and rely strictly on personal savings and minimal immediate assets. Regarding family dynamics, widows manage traditional role conflicts with community assistance, while divorcees experience severe role fusion due to a lack of support networks. In faith, spiritual beliefs act as a vital psychological anchor, helping divorced mothers rebuild their social reputation through market piety. Across both groups, participants operate through effectuation logic, using available resources to secure immediate household survival rather than long-term strategic expansion. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how marital dissolution trajectory’s structure micro-entrepreneurship, directly challenging gender-blind business frameworks.
