Abstract

Thermochromic PU leather is a responsive material that changes color in reaction to temperature; it is a modern, evolving material. The author designed a "kiss lock" handbag using Thermochromic PU leather featuring the Prabha Balitar batik motif, applied via engraving and color finishing, thereby creating a fashion accessory that is both interactive and responsive. This design addresses the fashion industry's ongoing challenge of product differentiation, where responsive materials like Thermochromic PU leather offer innovation opportunities through temperature induced color changes. The Prabha Balitar motif distinctive to the Blitar region for its bold, geometric patterns was engraved onto the Thermochromic PU leather, with the engraved areas colored to complement the material's base color prior to the temperature-induced shift. The design process employed an iterative, exploratory approach, encompassing literature reviews, prototype experimentation, and user evaluation. The results demonstrate that the handbag successfully reveals the batik motif as the temperature changes, creating an interactive, aesthetic experience driven by the properties of the Thermochromic PU leather. This project contributes to the development of fashion products that blend technological materials with local cultural identity, offering potential for broader application within Indonesia's creative industries.
