Abstract

The reciprocal relationship between music and architecture is rooted in their shared ontological foundation as mediums that shape phenomenological experience. However, the practical translation of musical concepts into physical space often falls into the trap of superficial visual imitation or the direct transfer of appearances, thereby losing their essential meaning. This design research proposes a methodological intervention using the Displacement of Concept framework and the First Principle Reduction approach to overcome such translation failures. The selected subject of translation is the ecosystem of five compositions from Max Richter’s album *The Blue Notebooks*, which collectively orchestrate the emotional metabolism of unresolved grief. The internal structure of these compositions is analyzed using empirical data from Samuel Rothermel’s thesis and then stripped of all sonic characteristics to reveal their underlying logical principles. These principles are subsequently translated into an architectural grammar through a phenomenon-forming quadrant that intersects the dimensions of Space and Materiality across both Physical and Ephemeral realms. This spatial transformation produces an absolute linear sequential circulation route extending approximately two kilometers on a pile-supported structure in the waters of the Hudson River, Manhattan, guiding visitors through successive phases of spatial isolation, compression, and catharsis. The design exploration successfully integrates a clear separation between a pragmatically functioning service building and a linear experiential structure dedicated solely to immersive spatial experience. The final outcome demonstrates that the ephemeral qualities inherent in music can be accurately translated into the tectonic enclosure of architectural space without relying on literal visual imitation.
