Abstract
Meningkatnya perhatian terhadap kesejahteraan hewan dan keberlanjutan mendorong perlunya pendekatan baru dalam perancangan fasilitas berkuda. Newmarket, United Kingdom, sebagai pusat Thoroughbred breeding dan horse racing, memerlukan fasilitas yang tidak hanya mendukung aktivitas berkuda, tetapi juga meningkatkan kesejahteraan kuda serta pengalaman pengguna. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan konsep Open Range sebagai pendekatan arsitektur pada perancangan Equestrian Centre yang mengintegrasikan horse welfare, arsitektur berkelanjutan, dan hubungan antara manusia, kuda, serta lingkungan. Metode penelitian menggunakan pendekatan Research by Design yang mengacu pada RIBA Plan of Work 2020, melalui studi literatur, studi preseden, analisis tapak, serta evaluasi desain berdasarkan UK Building Regulations, BREEAM, dan One Click LCA. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan sistem open stable yang terhubung dengan paddock, clubhouse berkonsep open façade, serta veterinary centre dengan sirkulasi terpisah antara manusia dan kuda mampu menciptakan lingkungan yang lebih aman, nyaman, dan mendukung perilaku alami kuda. Selain memenuhi standar teknis dan efisiensi energi, rancangan ini juga memperkuat hubungan antara manusia, kuda, dan alam melalui penerapan prinsip biophilic design. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa konsep Open Range dapat menjadi alternatif pendekatan dalam pengembangan fasilitas equestrian yang lebih berkelanjutan, berorientasi pada kesejahteraan hewan, serta memenuhi standar perancangan di Inggris.

Based upon the study results, the main design strategy to be used in developing this equine facility is the "Open Range" Concept. In contrast to other types of equestrian centers utilizing enclosures (stalls) and limiting the movement of horses from one location to another, this design will utilize a series of open stables linked together and connect each individual stall to paddock space. This will allow natural movement of horses between indoors and outdoors. The overall development plan for the property establishes three distinct but interrelated "zones". They are the clubhouse, stable, veterinary center, training area(s), and future race track. The clubhouse was created as a central gathering place for guests to view the horses and surrounding landscape as they graze in the adjacent paddocks through its open front elevation. The stable utilizes an open path of travel for both people and horses. Each horse stall has been lined with a soft wood material and can have the roof opened or closed depending on weather conditions. If a horse requires immediate medical attention, it can quickly be transported out of the stable by opening up the overhead roof skylights. The Veterinary Center also utilized a welfare first philosophy when designing the building. Separate entrance points were established for people and horses. In addition to having designated treatment and recovery rooms, there are large windows which provide clear visibility for spectators to understand how animals receive their care.
