Abstract

Indonesia has vast solar energy potential with an average daily radiation of 4.8–5.1 kWh/m², which can be utilized as an effective renewable energy source. This research focuses on the implementation of a solar panel system on the Barge Mounted Power Plant (BMPP) Nusantara 2, a 60 MW floating power plant that functions as a generating unit and a black start unit for the large-scale island interconnection grid in Indonesia. During standby conditions, the vessel consumes electricity from the on-shore grid, which contributes to operational costs. Through the design and simulation of a solar panel system, this study aims to reduce reliance on purchasing electricity from PLN (the state electricity company) during standby periods, thereby lowering operational expenses. With 204 solar modules (335 Watts each) installed on the barge and using irradiation data obtained from the Global Solar Atlas software, it was found that at peak irradiation of 561 Wh/m², the solar panel system can generate 36.2 kW of electricity, leading to the selection of a 37.5 kW inverter. The lighting load of 17.9 kW will be powered by the solar power system during standby. When the solar system's production exceeds the load, the surplus will be used to charge the batteries. When solar production is insufficient to power the load, electricity will be supplied from three batteries with a total capacity of 270.6 kW, which can support the load for 15 hours. Based on the Global Solar Atlas software, the installed solar panel system is capable of generating 95,695.56 kWh per year. With the local industrial electricity tariff from PLN set at 1,300 Rupiah per kWh, the reduction in electricity purchase costs from installing the solar panels amounts to 124.4 million Rupiah per year. The investment cost for the solar power system installation is 512.06 million Rupiah, financed through a bank loan with a 5% interest rate. Maintenance costs are 5% of the capital installation cost (5% of 512.06 million Rupiah) per year, with an annual escalation of 3%. Therefore, the payback period can be calculated and is determined to be 8 years and 3 months.
