Abstract

UBP Labuhan Angin provides electrical energy to meet the needs of the community and industry. In efforts to fulfill electricity demands and maintain plant readiness, water treatment, as the primary raw material to be converted into dry steam is a critical factor that requires careful attention. In this water treatment process, the high pressure (HP) pump functions to increase the working pressure of seawater toward the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) vessel to create a reverse osmosis process. Any disruption in the performance of the HP pump will directly impact the availability of boiler feedwater. The object of failure in this study is the fracture of the HP pump shaft, which occurred within an operational timeframe of 5–14 days, falling far short of the manufacturer's standard. Therefore, the researchers conducted an analysis and identified the mechanisms causing this failure through chemical composition testing, fractography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), and hardness testing. The analysis results revealed that the failure of the shaft was initially caused by an error in the selection of the material type, which did not comply with the manufacturer's recommendations. Crack initiation occurred in the root gear area, triggered by stress concentration on the shaft gear. This crack subsequently propagated due to dynamic loading, exhibiting a fatigue propagation pattern, until the remaining cross-section of the shaft is unable to sustain the load and suffered a brittle fracture.
