Abstract

The High School Boys’ Dormitory and ARLA House projects represent two distinct architectural concepts that share a common approach to addressing functional challenges, user needs, and the building’s context. The implementation of the 13 competency standards established by the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI) was a key aspect of the design process. The High School Boys’ Dormitory, located in Surabaya, was designed with a focus on students’ needs, efficiency, and sustainability. Meanwhile, the ARLA House in Surabaya shares a similar concept but delves deeper into the residents’ needs, emphasizing functionality, comfort, natural lighting, and sustainability. In both of these design projects, natural lighting, comfort, functionality, and user needs are prioritized as the primary considerations. This report emphasizes that an architect’s ability to program space is grounded in site analysis, user needs analysis, and design standards—while also taking into account ethical and aesthetic considerations—to create spaces that are both functional and provide meaningful spatial experiences.
