Abstract

Birmingham dikenal luas karena identitas budaya, sejarah industri, dan keragaman penduduknya. Namun, kota ini belum memiliki ruang budaya yang inklusif, tempat di mana orang-orang dari berbagai latar belakang dapat berkumpul untuk menikmati seni, pertunjukan, pendidikan, dan kegiatan komunitas dalam satu wadah. Proyek ini bertujuan merancang Birmingham Global Art and Culture Museum sebagai bangunan publik yang terinspirasi oleh pergerakan dan sejarah kanal-kanal Birmingham. Proses perancangannya menerapkan pendekatan arsitektur pragmatis yang mencakup analisis tapak dan iklim, studi preseden, penyusunan program ruang, pengembangan konsep, studi gubahan massa, serta pengembangan desain teknis. Konsep kanal diwujudkan melalui bentuk bangunan yang melengkung, jalur sirkulasi yang saling terhubung, area halaman terbuka, dan alur pengalaman pengunjung yang berkelanjutan. Desain akhirnya berupa kompleks museum dua lantai yang dilengkapi dengan galeri, teater, ruang kelas, ruang lokakarya, perpustakaan, kafe, ruang kantor, area layanan, serta ruang publik dengan penataan lanskap. Jalur sirkulasi yang terpisah disediakan bagi pengunjung, pelajar, penampil, staf, dan aktivitas layanan untuk meminimalkan konflik antarfungsi. Desain ini juga mengintegrasikan akses masuk yang mudah dijangkau, lift, akses bebas hambatan (step-free access), pencahayaan alami, sistem ventilasi campuran, panel surya, atap hijau dan biru, perencanaan keselamatan kebakaran, serta pengendalian kondisi lingkungan untuk ruang galeri. Proposal akhir ini menunjukkan bagaimana sejarah kanal Birmingham dapat dikembangkan menjadi konsep arsitektur yang jelas, sekaligus menciptakan ruang budaya yang terbuka, inklusif, dan fungsional bagi kota tersebut.

Birmingham is renowned for its cultural identity, industrial history and diverse population. Yet the city is missing a cultural space that is inclusive, where people of various backgrounds can convene to experience art, performances, education and community activities under one roof. This project aims to design the Birmingham Global Art and Culture Museum as a public building inspired by the movement and history of Birmingham’s canals. The design process involved a pragmatic architectural approach that included site and climate analysis, precedent studies, room programming, concept development, massing studies, and technical design development. The canal concept was developed through curved building forms, connected circulation routes, courtyards and a continuous visitor experience. The final design is a two-storey museum complex with galleries, a black box theatre, classrooms, workshops, a library, a cafe, offices, service areas and landscaped public spaces. Different circulation routes are provided for visitors, students, performers, staff and service activities to reduce conflicts between functions. The design also incorporates accessible entrances, lifts, step-free access, natural lighting, mixed ventilation, solar panels, green and blue roofs, fire-safety planning and controlled environmental conditions for the gallery spaces. The final proposal illustrates how the history of Birmingham’s canals can be developed into a clear architectural concept, whilst creating an open, inclusive and functional cultural space for the city.
