Abstract

The use of cutting fluid in machining processes plays an important role in reducing friction, controlling cutting temperature, and improving the surface quality of machined products. However, mineral oil-based cutting fluids have negative environmental impacts due to their low biodegradability and potential health hazards. This study aims to analyze the use of Virgin Papaya Seed Oil (VPSO) and Virgin Avocado Seed Oil (VASO), derived from papaya seed and avocado seed waste, as environmentally friendly alternative cutting fluids on surface roughness and cutting temperature during the finishing process of Aluminum AA7075 using a vertical milling machine. The research employed a laboratory experimental method using the Taguchi L9 (3³) design with variations in cutting fluid type, spindle speed ranging from 3,500 to 5,500 rpm, and depth of cut ranging from 0.25 to 0.75 mm. Surface roughness was measured using a Mitutoyo Surface Roughness Tester, while cutting temperature was measured using a Type-K thermocouple. The results showed that VPSO produced the lowest surface roughness value of 0.647 µm, which was lower than those obtained using VASO and mineral cutting fluid. In the cutting temperature test, VPSO also demonstrated better cooling performance, resulting in the lowest average temperature of 30.23 °C. The Signal-to-Noise Ratio (S/N Ratio) analysis based on the Taguchi method indicated that the type of cutting fluid significantly affected machining performance. Furthermore, the biodegradable properties and utilization of organic waste in VPSO and VASO support the implementation of green manufacturing and circular economy principles in the manufacturing industry. Therefore, VPSO has the potential to serve as an effective and environmentally friendly alternative cutting fluid for the milling process of Aluminum AA7075.
