Abstract

Candidasa Beach is a coastal area in Karangasem Regency, Bali, that is experiencing abrasion due to the collapse of sediment transport along the coast. Mitigation efforts that have been carried out through the construction of groin and sand feeding systems still require evaluation to determine the effectiveness of the groin configuration in retaining sediment and controlling changes in coastal morphology. This study aims to analyze the effect of the existing groin system on the morphology of Candidasa Beach, compare morphological changes in several alternative groin configurations, and determine the most effective groin configuration in retaining sand from sand nutrition. The study was conducted using MIKE 21 software with Hydrodynamic (HD), Spectral Wave (SW), and Sand Transport (ST) modules. Simulations were conducted under five conditions: without groynes, existing groyne system, Alternative 1, Alternative 2, and Alternative 3. Shoreline changes were analyzed using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), Bed Level Change, Bed Level, retained sand volume, and current velocity. Furthermore, the best configuration was tested through a 50-year long-term simulation to evaluate the stability of coastal morphology. The results of the study indicate that the groyne system affects the morphological changes of Candidasa Beach, where each configuration produces a different response to sediment distribution. Based on the comparison results, Alternative 2 provides the best performance with an average shoreline advance of 69.2 m, an accretion proportion of 87% and abrasion of 13%, a more even distribution of bed level changes, the largest retained sand volume of 198,236.55 m³, and a decrease in average current velocity to around 0.003 m/s. The results of a 50-year long-term simulation show that the configuration is still able to maintain stable coastal morphological development through maintained sedimentation distribution. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the groyne configuration in Alternative 2 is the most effective configuration in maintaining sand from sand nourishment and controlling morphological changes in Candidasa Beach in a sustainable manner.
