Abstract

The textile industry produces wastewater containing synthetic dyes, one of which is methylene blue, which is difficult to degrade naturally and may cause aquatic pollution. Photocatalysis using TiO2 is an effective method for dye degradation; however, its application is still limited by low cahaya tampak response, rapid electron–hole recombination, particle agglomeration, and difficulty in separating powder photocatalysts from treated water. This study aimed to synthesize a Zeolite-X/TiO2@g-C3N4 composite as a filler in a polyacrylonitrile-based nanofiber membrane for methylene blue degradation. g-C3N4 was synthesized through thermal calcination of urea, TiO2 was prepared using the sol-gel method, while TiO2@g-C3N4 composites were synthesized using one-pot and physical mixing methods. The Zeolite-X/TiO2@g-C3N4 composite was then synthesized hydrothermally and incorporated into PAN nanofiber membranes through electrospinning with filler variations of 5 wt%, 10 wt%, and 15 wt% relative to PAN. The synthesized materials were characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, and UV-Vis DRS, while methylene blue degradation activity was evaluated using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a maximum wavelength of 663.8 nm. The characterization results confirmed the successful formation of g-C3N4, anatase TiO2, and the Zeolite-X/TiO2@g-C3N4 composite. The degradation test showed that the PAN/T membrane exhibited the highest activity, reducing methylene blue concentration from 9.9825 ppm to 0.1963 ppm with a degradation efficiency of 98.256%. Among the PAN/ZTG variations, the best performance was obtained from PAN/ZTG 15 wt%, with a degradation efficiency of 88.947%. Kinetic analysis indicated that methylene blue degradation followed the second-order kinetic model, with an average R2 value of 0.931. These results demonstrate that PAN nanofiber membranes containing TiO2 or Zeolite-X/TiO2@g-C3N4 have potential as easily separable photocatalytic materials for methylene blue dye wastewater treatment.
