Abstract

A propeller is a component of a ship propulsion system that converts rotational power into thrust. This study investigated the effect of a Contracted and Loaded Tip (CLT) winglet modification on the open-water characteristics of a Gawn Series propeller for a 60 m fast patrol vessel. The analysis used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the Moving Reference Frame (MRF) approach, the SST k-ωturbulence model, and a rotational speed of 2,132 rpm. Three models were evaluated: the baseline Gawn Series propeller with a diameter of 116.43 mm, the 3.32 mm CLT model with an actual diameter of 113.67 mm, and the 6.64 mm CLT model with an actual diameter of 110.91 mm. Because the actual diameters differed, each model produced different advance coefficient \left(J\right)\ values. Comparisons were conducted at J=0.1,0.3,0.5,0.7,0.9,and 1.1using the first data point to represent J≈0.1and linear interpolation of K_{T}\ and 10K_{Q\ }for J=0.3–1.1. Efficiency was recalculated from the interpolated coefficients. The 3.32 mm CLT model increased K_{T}\ by 11.30%–21.52% and 10K_{Q}by 13.00%–18.28% relative to the baseline, while its efficiency ranged from a 1.65% decrease to a 2.76% increase. The 6.64 mm CLT model increased K_{T}\ by 23.35%–41.68% and 10K_{Q}by 28.55%–41.26%, but had lower efficiency at J=0.3–0.9. Compared with the 3.32 mm CLT model, its efficiency decreased by 0.14%–2.84%. Therefore, the 3.32 mm CLT model provided the best balance between thrust coefficient, torque requirement, and efficiency under relatively uniform, calm open-water conditions.
