Abstract

This study investigates the effect of incorporating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) additives and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) fiber reinforcement on the structural and functional performance of geopolymer membranes. PVA and MCC were each added at varying mass fractions of 0.4%, 0.6%, and 0.8% relative to the total mass of the geopolymer matrix. The metakaolin-based geopolymer membranes were synthesized and cured for 28 days in a sealed container. Subsequently, the membranes were washed with ethanol and characterized using SEM, MIP, flexural strength testing, and membrane separation performance against probe molecules of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with molecular weights of 600, 1000, 6000, and 8000 Da. The results indicate that the geopolymer membranes fall within the ultrafiltration (UF) category. The addition of either PVA or MCC significantly narrows the pore size distribution and enhances membrane selectivity. The incorporation of MCC improves the flexural strength of the membrane proportionally with increasing content. In contrast, the addition of PVA shows an opposite trend, resulting in decreased mechanical strength. The geopolymer membrane containing 0.8% MCC is identified as the optimal composition, exhibiting favorable selectivity and the highest mechanical strength of 0.13 MPa. This study presents a promising approach for the development of geopolymer membranes as a novel alternative for ultrafiltration (UF) applications, offering selective separation performance, high mechanical strength, simple synthesis procedures, and cost-effectiveness.
