Abstract

Single Point Mooring (SPM) is an offshore mooring facility used to support fluid transfer operations between tankers and production facilities. The performance of an SPM is influenced by the buoy geometry, which determines its hydrodynamic characteristics, mooring loads, and structural strength. This study aims to optimize the geometry design of a Hexagonal SPM by comparing one cylindrical model (M1) and two hexagonal models (M2 and M3) with different diameter and draft configurations. The analyses conducted include hydrodynamic analysis to obtain the Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs), mooring analysis using time-domain simulations, and structural strength analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The results show that changing the buoy geometry from a cylindrical to a hexagonal shape significantly reduces mooring loads. Under extreme conditions, the maximum mooring tension of model M1 reached 2,293.66 kN, while models M2 and M3 produced maximum tensions of 304.36 kN and 384.04 kN, respectively. These results indicate that a hexagonal geometry with a larger draft can improve hydrodynamic performance, thereby reducing the loads transmitted to the mooring system. Structural analysis results show that all models satisfy the allowable stress criteria under both operational and extreme conditions. Based on the overall evaluation, the hexagonal model M2 demonstrated the best performance by achieving the lowest mooring tension while meeting the structural strength requirements.
