Abstract

Methylene blue dye is a major contaminant in textile industry wastewater; it is resistant to natural degradation and poses a risk of polluting aquatic environments. To address this issue, this study investigates the synthesis and application of the (MCM 41)-(ZIF-8)-(TiO2) composite material, which functions as both an adsorbent and a photocatalyst for methylene blue degradation. In this study, MCM-41 served as the base material, while ZIF-8 and TiO2 were incorporated at a total loading of 25 wt% relative to the MCM-41 mass. The ZIF-8:TiO2 ratio was varied (75:25, 50:50, and 25:75) using a solid-state method. The synthesized materials were characterized via XRD, FTIR, UV-DRS, XPS, and SEM-EDX to determine their structure, functional groups, morphology, optical properties, and surface composition. Characterization results confirmed the successful integration of MCM-41, ZIF-8, and TiO2 into the composite material. XRD analysis revealed peaks at 7°, 13°, 17°, and 20°, indicating the presence of TiO2 and ZIF-8 alongside the amorphous MCM-41 phase. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of Si-O-Si, Ti-O-Ti, and Zn-N groups, demonstrating homogeneous mixing of the components, while UV-DRS analysis showed a shift in the composite material's bandgap from 5.441 eV to 3.788 eV. Adsorption-photocatalytic testing demonstrated that the (MCM-41)-(ZIF-8)25-(TiO2)75 composite exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity. The findings indicate that the (MCM-41)-(ZIF-8) (TiO2) composite holds potential as an effective and sustainable material for dye wastewater treatment.
