Abstract
Usaha menengah memiliki peran strategis dalam mendorong pertumbuhan ekonomi melalui kapasitas produksi, penyerapan tenaga kerja, dan kemampuan menciptakan nilai tambah. Namun, jumlah usaha menengah di Surabaya masih relatif terbatas dibandingkan usaha mikro dan kecil, sementara pelaku usaha juga menghadapi berbagai tantangan, seperti persaingan bisnis yang semakin kompetitif, perkembangan teknologi, serta perlunya peningkatan kompetensi manajerial dan inovasi untuk menjaga keberlanjutan usaha. Kondisi tersebut menunjukkan pentingnya penguatan kapabilitas internal agar usaha menengah mampu mencapai sustainable performance. Maka dari itu, penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi dengan mengkaji hubungan antara entrepreneurial competencies, innovation, dan sustainable performance pada pelaku usaha menengah di Surabaya, yang masih jarang diteliti dalam studi sebelumnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan Resource-Based View (RBV) Theory sebagai landasan teoritis, yang memandang kompetensi kewirausahaan dan kemampuan inovasi sebagai sumber daya internal strategis yang dapat menciptakan keunggulan kompetitif dan mendukung kinerja usaha berkelanjutan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan yakni pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain cross-sectional, melalui penyebaran kuesioner kepada 130 pelaku usaha menengah di Surabaya yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling, serta dianalisis menggunakan Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa entrepreneurial competencies berpengaruh positif terhadap innovation, entrepreneurial competencies dan innovation berpengaruh positif terhadap sustainable performance, serta innovation mampu memediasi hubungan antara entrepreneurial competencies dan sustainable performance pada usaha menengah di Surabaya. Pelaku usaha menengah di Surabaya disarankan untuk terus meningkatkan kompetensi kewirausahaan dan mendorong inovasi secara berkelanjutan sebagai strategi dalam meningkatkan sustainable performance perusahaan.

Medium-sized enterprises play a strategic role in driving economic growth through their production capacity, employment generation, and ability to create added value. However, the number of medium-sized enterprises in Surabaya remains relatively limited compared to micro and small enterprises, while business owners continue to face challenges such as increasingly intense competition, technological developments, and the need to strengthen managerial competencies and innovation to maintain business sustainability. These conditions highlight the importance of enhancing internal capabilities to achieve sustainable performance. Therefore, this study contributes by examining the relationship between entrepreneurial competencies, innovation, and sustainable performance in MSMEs in Surabaya, which has been relatively underexplored in previous research. This research is grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV) Theory, which considers entrepreneurial competencies and innovation capability as strategic internal resources that can create competitive advantage and support sustainable business performance. The study employs a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design, using questionnaires distributed to 130 medium enterprises actors in Surabaya selected through purposive sampling, and the data are analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results of this study indicate that entrepreneurial competencies have a positive and significant effect on innovation. Furthermore, entrepreneurial competencies and innovation have a positive and significant effect on sustainable performance, while innovation is proven to positively and significantly mediate the relationship between entrepreneurial competencies and sustainable performance among medium-sized enterprises in Surabaya. Based on these findings, owners and founders of medium-sized enterprises in Surabaya are encouraged to continuously enhance their entrepreneurial competencies and foster continuous innovation as a strategy to improve the sustainable performance of their businesses.
