Abstract

Electrical distribution systems in manufacturing industries have become increasingly complex with the integration of Photovoltaic (PV) Systems as a source of Distributed Generation (DG). The integration of PV systems changes the power flow from unidirectional to bidirectional, which affects the coordination of Overcurrent Relay (OCR) protection systems originally designed for conventional distribution networks. This change may lead to coordination problems, including overtripping and undertripping, thereby reducing the reliability, selectivity, and sensitivity of the protection system. This study aims to optimize OCR protection relay coordination in an industrial distribution system integrated with a PV system using the Linear Programming (LP) method. The case study was conducted on the Grease Manufacturing Plant (GMP) project in Marunda, Bekasi, developed by PT Siemens Indonesia. The electrical distribution system was modeled using ETAP 20.6.0, while the optimization process focused on determining the optimal Time Multiplier Setting (TMS) and pickup current values. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed LP-based approach successfully achieves relay coordination by ensuring that the Time-Current Characteristic (TCC) curves do not intersect and that the Coordination Time Interval (CTI) for all primary and backup relay pairs remains within the recommended range of 0.2–0.4 seconds. These results indicate that the proposed method improves the selectivity and reliability of the protection system while maintaining proper relay coordination in an industrial distribution network integrated with a PV system.
