Abstract

The Application Service Provider (ASP) concept, introduced in 1999, has become one of the outsourcing choices in the field of IT. Some of the main challenges for a company in implementing ASP are data security guarantees, the business continuity of the service provider, and insufficient infrastructure. This thesis discusses a method to overcome one of the aforementioned problems: insufficient infrastructure, particularly the slow communication line between the user and the provider. The core concept of this method is how to minimize passing data traffic. This concept was difficult to implement in the early days of ASP due to a lack of supporting technology; furthermore, the numerous security risks faced led almost all companies to use firewalls to protect their internal networks. The research methodology involves comparing the performance between an ASP system using the Active Server Pages concept and one using the Web Service concept, specifically in low-bandwidth environments. Performance measurements between the two systems were conducted under varying conditions, including the number of users, data volume, and changing bandwidth. Based on the experimental results across various conditions, it can be concluded that ASP performance utilizing Web Service technology can address insufficient infrastructure problems—such as those in Indonesia, where the majority of users rely on dial-up modems as a communication medium to the internet.
