Abstract

Removal of iron content (Fe²⁺) from water is an important process. The impacts generated by Fe²⁺ in water if it is not removed include a yellowish color, stains on clothes that are difficult to remove, and an unpleasant taste that makes the water unsuitable for drinking. In this research, the removal efficiency of iron content using a Forced Draft Aerator and Slow Sand Filter was studied.
The purpose of this research is to study the performance of the Forced Draft Aerator, sedimentation, and filtration in removing Fe²⁺ content using an aeration method. The aerator was designed for household-scale use. Water sample analyses were conducted in a laboratory. The water used in this research was artificial groundwater with an average Fe²⁺ content of 15.035 mg/L.
This research started with equipment design, sand sieve analysis, water flow calibration, and preparation of artificial groundwater. Replication was conducted for variable tests involving a tray aerator with a slope of 30°–45°, 2–3 levels, a water flow rate of 0.52 L/min–1.04 L/min, the use of a fan, and the influence of the sedimentation process. The results of the research show that the iron content was reduced to 0.03 mg/L–0.245 mg/L after the artificial water had been oxidized, clarified, and filtered. The removal efficiency was 74.98%–99.75%. The final DO content was 1.09 mg/L–2.50 mg/L, and the average pH value was 7.31.
The results were obtained under the following variable conditions: a tray aerator with a 45° slope, a water flow rate of 0.52 L/min–0.78 L/min, a 2-level tray, application of a fan, 10 minutes of sedimentation, application of a slow sand filter, and a sand media thickness of 0.3 m in the slow sand filter, with a UC of 2.23 and an ES of 0.215. The Fe²⁺ content of 0.03 mg/L–0.245 mg/L is below the maximum value suggested in Kepmenkes RI No. 907 of 2002, which specifies a maximum iron content in drinking water of 0.3 mg/L.
