Abstract

Smartcard technology has been widely used in education, banking, transportation, and other service industries. By using the smartcard, data can be accessed quickly and reliably. In the field of education, a smartcard has been implemented for the storage of student data, both personal data and study data, in a limited capacity. Currently, two techniques have been developed to streamline data storage on a smartcard: the use of flat files and the use of XML. Both of these techniques still do not consider data compression techniques when storing data to a smartcard. XML compression techniques have also been developed, but they are not specific to academic data that have particular data types. This study aims to obtain the minimum possible amount of data storage to be kept on the smartcard for academic data. This study developed a combination of XML compression techniques based on the DAG approach and zlib compression for each XML tag, as well as bit-reducing and zlib techniques for numerical and date data types. The research carried out has been successfully implemented on the Windows operating system and can produce an average compression ratio of 12.02% for 51 test data files, and a compression ratio of 42.86% relative to the initial data in the database. The average time for data compression and writing the results into the smartcard is 7.36 seconds for an average data size of 16.58 KB. The average time for decompression and searching until the data is found is 5.51 seconds for an average data size of 2.002 KB. The average time to query data in memory is 0.0019 seconds.
