Abstract

The geographical conditions of Indonesia, which predominantly consist of water areas, allow the emergence of settlements located along or above bodies of water, including rivers, lakes, and seas. This condition has given rise to various forms of water-oriented settlements and activities, such as waterfront cities, floating houses, floating markets, and others. Houses built above water represent a distinctive phenomenon found in many parts of Indonesia, influenced by the country’s cultural, ethnic, and geographical diversity. Tropical climates are characterized by relatively small and constant differences in temperature between day and night, with relatively high air humidity at night and lower humidity during the day, which are typical characteristics of humid tropical climates. The presence of a river as the site on which a building stands can affect its thermal conditions. To determine the extent to which a river influences building thermal conditions, this study compares a house located above a river with a house located on land along Antasan Kecil Barat Street, Banjarmasin. This research examines the thermal phenomena occurring in both buildings. The thermal conditions of the two buildings were recorded using a thermohygrograph continuously for one week at the same time. Data were also collected on climatic conditions during the research period and natural phenomena occurring around the sites. The results show that, in addition to environmental and design factors, the presence of a river also plays an important role in determining building thermal performance. The house located above the river has cooler thermal conditions because the river contributes to cooling the surrounding air, thereby facilitating the heat-release process of the building. This is evident from the thermal differences observed when the river house is compared with a similar house located on land.
