Abstract

The Yogyakarta Kraton, established in 1756 by Sultan Hamengku Buwana I, underwent renovation during the reign of Sultan Hamengku Buwana VIII. The renovation was carried out on almost all of the buildings within the Kraton complex. The renovation revealed the presence of European architectural elements. To identify where these European architectural elements were used, an identification process was conducted using a naturalistic approach. Through the identification of these European architectural elements, tendencies in their use within the Yogyakarta Kraton could be observed. The identification was conducted on a sample consisting of buildings located within courtyards that are important for Kraton rituals, with the consideration of obtaining a high degree of variation and extreme cases. The identification results show that the golden section proportion is used in all buildings, while European forms and ornaments are used only in certain places. The tendency identified indicates that European forms and ornaments are found in spaces or buildings that have relatively important but non-sacred functions. Sacred spaces, as well as spaces serving soldiers or abdi dalem, do not contain European forms and ornaments. Through an examination of the sacredness of the buildings and a historical study, it was found that European forms and ornaments were used as an effort to maintain social status. Therefore, these European forms and ornaments were not used in buildings intended for soldiers but were extensively applied to regol, the gateways enclosing the Kedaton courtyard, which is closely associated with the Kraton and the Sultan. However, the use of European forms and ornaments was constrained by the level of sacredness of the spaces or buildings, whereby highly sacred spaces were maintained without European forms and ornaments.
