Abstract

Quality is one of the keys to a company's success in winning the competition. The Six Sigma method, which was first implemented at Motorola, has proven effective in significantly reducing defects. The Six Sigma method aims to reduce variation and increase process capability to achieve zero defects. The cylinder liners produced by PT. Aneka Banu Sakti involve many processes and specifications or multiple acceptance criteria. The process steps observed in this research were the foundry and machining processes. After identifying the CTQ (Critical to Quality) of the process, the Y project for Six Sigma was determined. Principal Component Analysis and Factor Analysis in the multivariate method were used to group the variables of the Y project and input X into factors. The Y project for the machining process consisted of 14 variables grouped into 5 factors, while X for the foundry process consisted of 20 variables grouped into 6 factors. The results were used to construct control charts and conduct process capability analysis to determine the existing process conditions.
The DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) process in Six Sigma showed that the foundry process was not capable, with a process capability index of less than 1.33. The foundry process requires comprehensive improvement to increase its process capability. Several Y projects in the machining process had already achieved Six Sigma. However, the outer surfaces A and B as Y projects in machining had not yet achieved Six Sigma, and their process capability indices were the lowest, both individually and multivariately. The improvement process to increase the capability of the outer surface A and B processes involved changing the machine and method from cylindrical grinding to centerless grinding. The results showed that the process capability of the outer surfaces increased significantly and became capable, but had not yet reached Six Sigma, both individually and multivariately.
