Abstract
Cryptography has been a major issue in electronic communication nowadays. It is developed with two main approaches: cryptography for software applications with high throughput requirements, and cryptography for hardware applications with restricted resources such as limited storage, gate count, or power consumption. Beginning from 2004 until 2008, a competition was set up by ECRYPT, named the eSTREAM Project, to identify the best candidates for stream ciphers across hardware and software categories. This European IST project concluded with four winners for the software category and three winners for the hardware category. Trivium and MICKEY are two of the three winners for the hardware category. They are hardware-oriented stream ciphers providing the benefit of simple hardware design combined with a high level of security. For Trivium, a parallel implementation is possible to achieve higher throughput. A number of hardware implementations have been developed for these models using various technologies. In this research, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) are used, as they allow ready implementation at a low cost. Both models for 32-bit Trivium and MICKEY are migrated onto the Altera Cyclone II FPGA on the DE2-70 board from Terasic. As a result of this work, synthesizable VHDL codes for 1-, 2-, 4-, 8-, 16-, 32-, and 64-bit variants of Trivium and MICKEY are made available for further development and implementation, e.g., in CMOS technology. The hardware performance of these models is presented for comparison with implementations of the models in other technologies.
