Abstract

Suppliers often offer temporary price reductions to buyers as part of their operational strategy in supplier-buyer relationships. Under these conditions, buyers can improve the effectiveness of their inventory systems by placing special orders during the promotional period. Joint economic lot sizing is a mechanism for maintaining balance within a supply chain. This research develops mathematical models for joint economic lot size optimization in a supplier-buyer inventory system when the supplier offers decremental temporary discounts during a promotional period. The promotional period consists of n phases, with the discount level decreasing progressively from one phase to the next. The highest discount is offered when an order is placed during the first phase, whereas the lowest discount is offered when an order is placed during the final phase. Under these conditions, the supplier tends to encourage the buyer to place an order as early as possible during the promotional period. The buyer responds to this offer by placing a special order quantity in one of the phases. This study proposes two models that differ in terms of the duration of each phase, with discount levels distributed proportionally. In the first model, the duration of each phase is uniform, whereas in the second model, the duration is incremental, meaning that the higher the phase, the longer its duration. To evaluate the performance of the models, a numerical example with three discount levels is used, and the total joint cost associated with placing a special order in each phase is compared. The results demonstrate that the integrated model produces a lower total joint cost than the independent model. Analysis of the model behavior indicates that changes in phase duration and increases in discount levels affect the decision regarding when to place a special order and the corresponding special order quantity.
