Abstract

The increasingly competitive industrial environment has encouraged companies to continuously improve their business processes. However, the costs required to implement improvement projects are often substantial, while the available budget is limited. In addition, many improvement projects successfully improve processes but do not deliver satisfactory financial performance. Therefore, improvement project proposals should preferably be selected based on the expected increase in profit rather than the minimum cost required to implement a project. In improvement projects, failure costs are often the primary consideration, even though prevention costs and appraisal costs can also account for a significant proportion of the cost of quality. If these two costs are not taken into consideration, the resulting profit increase may not be representative. This study develops a mathematical model for selecting improvement project proposals by maximizing profit increase under a limited budget constraint while incorporating the PAF (Prevention-Appraisal-Failure) Model into the selection process. The mathematical model is formulated as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model. The model is tested using two sets of hypothetical data, namely varied data and flat data, and is executed using LINDO software. The results show that several improvement project proposals are selected because the corresponding processes have not yet reached their optimum areas. Other proposals are not selected because the corresponding processes have already reached their optimum areas. These proposals are excluded because they do not generate the maximum profit increase under the available budget constraint. The results demonstrate that the developed model can select improvement project proposals that maximize profit increase under a limited budget while incorporating the PAF Model. Therefore, the model can serve as a tool for management teams in selecting improvement project proposals so that improvement programs not only enhance business processes but also deliver sound financial performance.
