Abstract

The objective of this research is to model capacity flexibility in a supply chain. The proposed model aims to optimize customer orders in a supply chain where customers have the option to place orders with more than one factory, while each factory has different regular and overtime capacities and charges different prices for different order quantities. In facing business competition, companies need the ability to accommodate internal and external uncertainties in decision-making. Uncertainty in the business environment requires companies to maintain flexibility within their supply chains. In this context, flexibility refers to the ability of a supply chain to make changes, such as production volume and delivery time, in order to accommodate uncertainties occurring within the supply chain. This research develops a mathematical model to represent a supply chain consisting of several factories, warehouses, and retailers. Each factory is assumed to have regular and overtime capacity, with a higher unit cost when production is carried out using overtime capacity. The developed model accommodates different levels of capacity flexibility and flexibility in ordering policies. Due to differences in product costs between regular and overtime production, the resulting model has a nonlinear objective function. The problem is solved by treating overtime capacity as regular capacity at a dummy factory. Experiments are conducted by varying the level of capacity flexibility, represented by the ratio of total capacity to total demand, as well as by varying the minimum order quantity at each factory. Capacity flexibility in this research is represented by the ratio of total capacity to total demand, referred to as KID. The experimental results show a relationship between the total cost incurred in the supply chain and the level of capacity flexibility. A higher KID ratio, which indicates a higher level of capacity flexibility, results in lower costs throughout the supply chain. Ordering policy flexibility is represented by the MOQ value. A lower MOQ value indicates a more flexible ordering policy. The experimental results also demonstrate an interaction between capacity flexibility and ordering policy flexibility.
