Abstract

An experimental study was conducted on the dynamics of low-pressure plasma generation using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser operating at its fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm with a pulse width of 8 ns under low-pressure air conditions (5 torr), using a copper sample. To investigate the excitation mechanism of the sensitive Cu I emission lines at 521.8 nm, 515.3 nm, 510.5 nm, 324.7 nm, and 327.4 nm, a 60% transmission nickel mesh electrode was placed 5 mm in front of the copper sample surface. The mesh electrode was subjected to a high DC voltage in the range of 100–400 V to capture electrons ejected from the copper sample surface. By observing the emission intensities of the Cu I lines at 521.8 nm, 515.3 nm, 510.5 nm, 324.7 nm, and 327.4 nm in the region beyond the mesh electrode using an Optical Multichannel Analyzer, the mechanism of secondary plasma generation in low-pressure laser-induced plasma can be explained by an ion-electron recombination process. At an air pressure of 5 torr, the plasma temperature ranges from approximately 6000 to 7700 K. The recombination process occurs in the region before the mesh electrode, and applying a voltage of 100–400 V to the mesh electrode does not significantly reduce the emission intensities of the Cu lines.
