Abstract

A microstrip antenna with an operating frequency of 2.4 GHz was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The device has a wafer-like structure consisting of three layers: the top layer contains a square aluminum conducting patch and an RF input channel (feeding line), the middle layer consists of FR4 dielectric material with a relative permittivity of 4.2, and the bottom layer is a copper ground plane. The calculated device dimensions are approximately 38.76 mm × 30.13 mm × 1.6 mm, with a desired operating frequency range of 2.4–2.5 GHz. The antenna performance was optimized by varying the width of the feeding line, the inset feeding line, and the gap between the radiating patch and the feeding line. The measured return loss (S11) was −37.465 dB at the resonance frequency of 2.419925 GHz, with a near-ideal VSWR of 1.0271 and an impedance of 51.36 Ω. The measured bandwidth at a VSWR of 2:1 was 100.6498 MHz, with a power gain of 2.80 dB. In an experiment involving data transmission between two computers separated by 3 km, an SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of 13 dB was obtained, with an input level of −84 dB and a noise level of −97 dB. The experiment used a 15 m RG-8 cable with a loss of 0.5 dB/m and two connectors, each having a loss of 2 dB.
