Abstract
===============================================================================================================================
Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, with a population of approximately 270 million people. With such a large population, the demand for the industrial sector is also substantial. One of the important industries in Indonesia is the pulp industry. Pulp is produced through the separation of fibers from fibrous raw materials. Pulp can be produced from wood, non-wood materials, and waste paper. Pulp is a white fibrous material obtained through the removal of lignin from biomass (delignification). Pulp is used as a raw material for papermaking and can also be converted into cellulose-derived compounds, such as cellulose acetate. Lignin removal from biomass can be carried out through various processes, namely mechanical, semichemical, and chemical processes. In Indonesia, there are 62 pulp and paper companies, with a total production capacity of 7.93 million tons of pulp/year. As of September 2016, the pulp and paper industry had contributed USD 3.79 billion in foreign exchange earnings and ranked seventh among the largest foreign exchange contributors in the non-oil and gas sector. The pulp and paper industry is one of the industries that plays an important role in the Indonesian economy. Based on FAO data (2013), Indonesia maintained its position as the sixth-largest pulp exporter in the world, with total pulp exports of 2.25 million tons in 2002 and 2.93 million tons in 2011 (Unied, 2018). The sugarcane bagasse lignocellulosic biomass fractionation plant is planned to be established in East Java, specifically in Malang. The plant location was primarily determined based on the availability of raw materials, namely sugarcane bagasse, and the market, particularly paper mills in the East Java region. Other factors include land availability in Malang Regency and the availability of utilities in the area. The plant is planned to operate in batch mode for 24 hours per day and 330 days per year, with a production capacity of 100,000 tons of raw materials/year. The products produced by this plant are cellulose pulp and hemicellulose hydrolysate. Based on the economic analysis, the plant's internal rate of return (IRR) is 13.52%, with a bank interest rate of 7.95% and an annual inflation rate of 1.75%. Meanwhile, the payback period (POT) is 5.47 years, and the break-even point (BEP) is 29.87% based on the linear method. The plant is designed to have an operating life of 10 years and a construction period of 2 years. To produce 20,313 tons/year of cellulose pulp, a total production cost (TPC) of IDR 325,173,499,508.00 and a total investment cost (TCI) of IDR 759,600,490,542.00 are required. Based on the economic and technical analyses, the sugarcane bagasse lignocellulosic biomass fractionation plant is feasible to establish.
