Abstract
================================================================================================================================
Waste from palm oil mills consists of three types, namely liquid, solid, and gaseous waste. One of the solid wastes generated by the palm oil industry is Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB). EFB accounts for approximately 22–23% of the harvested fresh fruit bunches. One of the main constituents of empty fruit bunches is lignocellulose. Lignocellulose is a polysaccharide component that is abundant, particularly in agricultural, plantation, and forestry waste. Lignocellulose is composed of three polymers, namely cellulose (35–50%), hemicellulose (20–35%), and lignin (10–25%). This cellulose content can be further processed into Microcrystalline Cellulose. Microcrystalline Cellulose is widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries.
The Pre-Design of a Microcrystalline Cellulose Plant from EFB using the Steam Explosion Method is planned to start operating in 2025 with a production capacity of 10,000 tons/year. The plant is planned to be established in Kampar Regency, Riau. The location was selected based on considerations of supporting infrastructure, economic factors, and environmental factors.
The first step is lignocellulose fractionation. The first step is to prepare the raw materials that will be used as feed for the steam explosion reactor. Empty fruit bunches are transported using a belt conveyor (J-110) and then enter the size reduction stage so that the size of the EFB becomes smaller and more uniform. Next, the EFB is fed into a screw-shaped reactor using a belt conveyor (J-111) before entering the treatment stage. The fractionation stage uses the steam explosion method. At this stage, saturated steam at a temperature of 195°C and a pressure of 13 bar is introduced into the reactor (R-110). The incoming feed (EFB) is continuously fed together with saturated steam to maintain the temperature and pressure at 195°C and 13 bar. A screw inside the reactor is used to move the EFB. The EFB exits in the form of a thick slurry, which is then fed into the flash drum (F-112). In this unit, the slurry is separated from the steam discharged from the previous reactor. Subsequently, the EFB slurry is transported to the holding tank (F-210) using a bucket elevator (J-112).
The second stage is the delignification stage, namely cellulose separation. The EFB slurry is fed into a centrifuge (H-210) to carry out the solid-liquid separation process. It is then washed with washing water at five times the mass of the incoming EFB. The liquid product consists of hemicellulose and water, while the solid product consists of cellulose and lignin. The next step is the separation of lignin from cellulose using the organosolv method with the addition of NH₄OH and ethanol. The obtained cellulose and lignin are fed into the mixing tank (F-211), where NH₄OH, ethanol, and water are added before the mixture enters the delignification tank. In this process, the outlet from the mixing tank is fed into the delignification tank (F-212). The resulting slurry is then separated into solid and liquid phases using a centrifuge (H-211). In this centrifuge, washing is also carried out using washing water at seven times the mass of the incoming EFB. The liquid lignin fraction is removed along with ethanol and NH₄OH, while the solid product is cellulose in the form of a cake.
The third stage is the bleaching stage. The bleaching process is carried out to degrade the remaining lignin present in the pulp. This process is conducted in a bleaching tank (F-310) with the addition of H₂O₂ and NH₄OH at up to 3% of the total mass. The mixture is then heated using saturated steam through the jacket of the tank and held in the tank. Subsequently, the remaining lignin dissolves and undergoes a separation process in a centrifuge (H-310) to separate the solid and liquid phases. Washing water is also used at five times the mass of the incoming cellulose and lignin. The next step is the crystallization of cellulose with the addition of HCl. The pure cellulose solids obtained from the bleaching process are fed into the hydrolysis tank (F-311) and mixed with HCl at a concentration of 8% of the total cellulose mass. The mixture is also heated using steam through the tank jacket and held for 15 minutes. The resulting slurry is separated into solid and liquid fractions using a centrifuge (H-311). The washing process is also carried out by adding water at five times the total mass of the incoming cellulose. The liquid product consists of HCl and water, while the solid product is Microcrystalline Cellulose that still contains water.
The final step is to dry the obtained Microcrystalline Cellulose and reduce its particle size according to the product specifications for marketing. First, drying is carried out using a rotary dryer (D-310) with air that has been preheated using a heater (E-310) with the assistance of steam. After the drying process, the Microcrystalline Cellulose is reduced in particle size using a ball mill (C-310). Finally, the Microcrystalline Cellulose is stored in a storage tank (F-312) and subsequently transferred to the product warehouse for marketing.
The Pre-Design of the Microcrystalline Cellulose Plant from EFB using the Steam Explosion Method is designed as a Limited Liability Company (PT) with a line-and-staff organizational structure. To establish a plant with a production capacity of 10,000 tons/year, an investment of Rp308,701,221,355.10 is required, with a total production cost of Rp157,870,478,139.80 and estimated sales of Rp213,236,761,592.30. The estimated plant lifetime is 25 years, with an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 23.95%, a Payback Time (POT) of 9.2 years, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 51%.
