Abstract

The pre-design plant for sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) will be established in Gresik City, East Java. This plant has a production capacity of 35,000 tons/year of NaOH. The products are a 50% NaOH solution and a 33% HCl solution as a by-product. The main raw material used is industrial-grade NaCl, along with several supporting raw materials such as 98% sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), sodium carbonate, and other pretreatment materials. The production method used is the electrolysis of sodium chloride (NaCl), which produces NaOH solution and H₂ and Cl₂ gases, which are then reacted to form HCl. Initially, the salt enters the pretreatment unit to remove impurities. The salt is dissolved in water and sodium carbonate and flocculant are added as reagents. The impurities precipitate as CaCO₃ and MgCO₃. The purified brine solution then enters the electrolysis cell. A membrane cell is used to achieve an optimal Cl₂ yield and minimize electrical energy consumption during the process. At the anode, Cl⁻ ions are oxidized to produce Cl₂ gas. Meanwhile, at the cathode, a 30.5% NaOH solution is fed. At the cathode, water is reduced to produce H₂ gas, while Na⁺ ions move through the membrane and combine with OH⁻ ions to produce a 32% NaOH solution, which is subsequently concentrated to 50% NaOH. The Cl₂ and H₂ reactant gases undergo a treatment process to remove water. Cl₂ gas needs to be dried because wet Cl₂ is corrosive (Kidnay et al., 2011). The process is carried out by cooling the gas so that the water condenses, followed by water absorption using concentrated H₂SO₄ solution. Meanwhile, H₂ is separated from water through cooling. The gases, sufficiently free of water, are then reacted in a reactor to form HCl gas. The HCl gas is subsequently contacted with water in a falling-film absorber to produce a 33% HCl solution. This plant requires a capital expenditure of Rp549,807,392,118 and an operating expenditure of Rp148,890,808,466. Based on the economic analysis, the plant has an NPV of Rp2,040,057,494,912, an IRR of 32.29%, a POT of 3.75 years, and a BEP of 22.45%. Based on this analysis, it can be concluded that the HCl plant is feasible to be established.
