Abstract

The purpose of this final project is to investigate the effect of heat treatment, especially the quenching method, on the crack growth behavior of high tensile steel AH-36.
The experiment used three compact tension specimens with edge cracks and a thickness of 10 mm. After being heated to approximately 900 °C, each specimen was cooled directly in water at different temperatures: 5 °C (specimen I), 15 °C (specimen II), and 30 °C (specimen III). The loads applied to each specimen were 41 kN, 37 kN, and 36 kN.
Crack growth was calculated based on Paris' equation obtained from the testing. The Paris' equations for quenching temperatures of 5 °C, 15 °C, and 30 °C are da/dN = 2 × 10⁻¹¹ (ΔK)^3.456, da/dN = 1.03 × 10⁻¹⁰ (ΔK)^3.0227, and da/dN = 9.06 × 10⁻¹¹ (ΔK)^3.0157, respectively. The effect of quenching on the material at quenching temperatures of 5 °C, 15 °C, and 30 °C was not significant.
