Abstract

This final project examines the fracture toughness of HTS AH36 after the welding process, in which post-weld heat treatment was conducted with variations in heating temperature and thickness. The thickness variations used were 10 mm and 20 mm. The heat treatment method used a tempering process with heating temperature variations of 450°C, 550°C, and 650°C, followed by air cooling. The holding time for each specimen was 60 minutes. This final project aims to determine the effect of temperature and thickness in post-weld heat treatment on fracture toughness, obtain the fracture toughness of the weld metal of HTS AH36, and determine the tendency of the effect of heat treatment on fracture toughness using the Charpy impact test.

According to the test results, higher heating temperatures can improve the impact strength of the weld metal. However, in certain tempering temperature ranges, toughness degradation can occur due to temper brittleness. At a heating temperature of 650°C, toughness degradation occurred in the HTS AH36 weld metal, indicating a condition in which the material experienced temper brittleness.

Heating the specimen to 550°C resulted in the highest fracture toughness value of 25.97 kN·cm¹ for the 20 mm-thick specimen and the highest impact strength value of 2.238 J/mm² for a specimen size of 7.5 mm × 10 mm.
