Abstract

Stingray is one of the marine renewable energy devices that extracts usable electricity from tidal currents. Stingray was developed and patented by Engineering Business Limited, including U.S. Patent 6,731,018. The key component of Stingray is a wing similar to an airplane wing, but designed to operate underwater. The main principle of operation is to apply a positive or negative angle of attack relative to the tidal stream, causing the hydroplane wing to move up and down in an oscillating motion. The simplest quantitative model used to predict hydrodynamic and aerodynamic forces on a wing of finite span is the lifting line theory. The lifting line theory considers the wing to have a bound vortex and two semi-infinite vortex filaments behind the wing called trailing vortices. Trailing vortices induce additional drag, called induced drag. This final project attempts to model the hydrodynamic forces on the wing of Stingray using the lifting line theory. CFX, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program, is used to simulate the trailing vortices and pressure distribution. This research shows that the difference between the calculations using CFX and the lifting line theory is approximately 10%, and the use of foil endplates can reduce induced drag by 2%–5%.
