Abstract

Structural Transition Joint is a bimetal system that enables the welding of two different metals using a conventional welding process; in this case, aluminum is welded to steel. Two or three different metals are joined using an explosion bonding process. The purpose of this research is to examine the fracture toughness characteristics of STJ NC 603, where the crack is positioned perpendicular to the interface.
The fracture toughness tests were conducted using the three-point bending method based on the ASTM E399 standard. Six specimens were tested in this research, consisting of three specimens with the pre-crack tip on the aluminum side and three specimens with the pre-crack tip on the steel side. The tests were conducted to obtain the KQ values of each specimen, as well as the crack propagation characteristics of the bimetal system.
The test results showed that the average KQ value of the Nobelclad bimetal aluminum-steel structural transition joint test specimens with the pre-crack tip on the aluminum side was 41.95 Ksi√inch. The average KQ value of the Nobelclad bimetal aluminum-steel structural transition joint test specimens with the pre-crack tip on the steel side was 24.6 Ksi√inch. Structural failure of the bimetal occurred in the specimens with the pre-crack tip on the aluminum side due to the crack propagating horizontally and parallel to the interface.
