Abstract

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends were prepared at a temperature of 170°C with composition variations of 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30 using a Rheomix. Zinc stearate was added to the PVC/PMMA blends at concentrations of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%. The effect of zinc stearate addition on the miscibility of PVC/PMMA blends can be analyzed based on the results of mechanical tests and the physical appearance of the blend films. The transparent appearance of the PVC/PMMA blend films indicates that the blends are miscible at each composition variation. The addition of zinc stearate does not improve the miscibility of PVC/PMMA blends. The mechanical test results further confirm that the highest tensile strength is obtained in PVC/PMMA blends with 0% zinc stearate addition, followed by 0.5%. However, the highest elongation at break is obtained with a zinc stearate concentration of 0.5%.
