Abstract

In this research synthesis of MCM-41 using coal fly ash (CFA) as silica source with variation of hydrothermal temperatures and times has been done. The synthesis was initiated by leaching process using HCl in order to reduce metal contain in the CFA followed by alkali fussion process. The MCM-41 obtained was characterised using XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET, and FT-IR pyridin. The results showed that crystallinity, spesific surface area, total pore volume and wall thickness of the resulting of MCM-41 increased with increasing hydrothermal temperature and time. However a too long synthesis time at elevated temperature can also change the structure of resulting material. The optimum conditions for the hydrothermal synthesis were follow: between 4 and 6 days at 100 °C, between 2 and 4 days at 120 °C and between 20 hours and 1 day at 140 °C.
