Abstract

Copper is one of the heavy metals that can be harmful to the environment. Copper toxicity will work and show the effect if large amount of it has been entered to the living organism or exceeded the tolerant amount of copper. There are many different ways to treat copper. One of the technology is the treatment which use wetland plants. In a treatment unit which using wetland plants, there is a water balance which one of its components is evapotranspiration. Evapotranspiration processes can be influence the presence of water in the treatment unit. In this study, The solution of CuSO₄.5H₂O 4 ppm was used in batch reactors. The wetland plants, Kana (Canna sp), Cattail (Typha latifolia) and Ciperus (Cyperus papyrus), were used with three different density, which were 6 shoot/m², 10 shoot/m² and 14 shoot/m². Sand and gravel were used as the media. The result of this study showed that plant which had the fastest evapotranspiration rate was Cyperus papyrus 6 shoot/m² density, which had average evapotranspiration rate 0.5370 cm³/cm².day. And the most effective plant to remove Cu²⁺ was Typha latifolia 6 shoot/m² density which showed 59,00% removal efficiency. Although Cu²⁺ removal processes dependent to transpiration processes, the quantity of Cu²⁺ which was absorbed by the plant was not dependent to evapotranspiration rate.
