Abstract

This research investigated the ability of compost microbes, containing primarily Bacillus subtilis, in augmenting lead removal from soil, containing Pseudomonas putida. Various levels of lead-polluted soil, ranging from 10 to 70 mg/Kg, were amended with compost microbes in the proportion of *B. subtilis over P. putida of 3/1 and 1/1 (in colony-forming units: CFU). By means of half time for 50% lead removal and 50% microbial elimination (t-50) criterion, B. subtilis in synergy with P. putida augmented lead removal. Initial concentration time fifty (ICT-50) of bioaugmentation was a novel criterion to assess the maximum lead concentration initially present in soil that could be treated by addition of external microbial species. ICT-50 of 35 mg/Kg could be treated by addition of B. subtilis three times higher than P. putida in lead-polluted soil.
